My Dancers Prepare for CNY

The girls are getting ready for their first Chinese New Year performance later this month and I can tell you, this Mama is excited!! I can't wait to see them up on stage. I'm a little nervous, too, as their teacher has not allowed the parents inside the class to watch them. I have no idea if my girls know their dances or not. Yikes! They received their costumes a couple of weeks ago, while Nolan and I were out of town, so yesterday was the first day they tried on the whole ensemble for us. The ornate costumes made me want to play around a bit to capture some decent photos of the girls wearing them. For anyone interested, I detailed how I created the white backdrop here.

Of course, now I notice I should have brightened some of the backgrounds more, but I am not going to take the time to do so now. I may get around to it one day. (Ha! You all know how that goes, right?) Plus, I have tons more photos to edit. I had a lot of fun with this, and of course Mia gave me some cute outtakes. I hope to post more soon.

Have a great week!

These are stunning photographs but the real stars are your daughters. I attempted a similar technique for Christmas using a red microfleece blanket draped over my ironing board. I like the rich red velvety texture for winter the blanket provided.

You know, I have been meaning to ask you if you were all going this year. I was hoping to finally get to meet you and the girls. ;) I ran into Nolan last year, but you were upstairs taking pictures.

I can't wait to see the girls perform!

Adorable pics! They look so cute in their outfits!!

These are so AWESOME Michelle!! The girls look gorgeous in these bright colors...... WOW!!

Quick question..... were all three lights, speedlights?

How talented are you? Okay, I read that you used three flashes with one aimed at the back to eliminate shadows. I'm sort of an idiot with this...but how did you do that? I'd love to try something similar if I could.

You are a terrific photographer. I used to work in advertising and these look like some of the high quality ad shots I worked with. I'm impressed!

Thanks, ladies!!

Lisa - Yes, I used a Canon 580 EXII, a Canon 430 EXII and a Lumopro 120 - all three speedlights.

Jane - I used a Cactus V4 transmitter attached to the hot shoe on my camera and one Cactus V4receiver attached to each of the three flashes (three receivers in total). Many pros use Pocket Wizards instead of Cactus V4s, but the V4s are much less expensive. They have improved reliability since they first came out and I am generally pretty pleased with them. There is battery recycle time, but I think the PWs have that, too.

I hope this helps!

They look adorable! And I have to say - speaking from personal experience - you can survive anything they do up there, up to and including one of them picking a nose.

Beautiful images Michelle! They totally look like they were taken in a studio. I might have to try your technique. Of course, I don't have 3 flashes to use!

I can't wait to hear about the CNY performances! I love the costumes and am sure they know their routines perfectly (or perfectly for their ages)!

Wow! Gorgeous, colorful costumes!

I'm excited for you and your girls. I know it will go well. Q is singing a song with her class for Chinese New Year. They'll be on stage at a huge theater. I know Q knows the song, but I'm not sure she's going to be able to navigate the stage with the bright lights shining in her eyes.

Diana - Their dance instructor is from China, so every year she takes her students' measurements and has something custom-made in China. She brings back what she can in suitcases when she visits and ships the rest back. Last year, they had THE most adorable yellow peacock costumes for the 4-year old age group, but they didn't look very Chinese. I think they corrected that this year. Definitely CNY appropriate. :)
